Malali AKA Big Boat

Malali AKA Big Boat

July 29, 2016

MV Malali was constructed in Guyana by Messrs Sprostons Ltd, using the drawings of previous vessels M.V Torani and M.V Makouria with alterations to its superstructure in order to provide accommodation for a live-aboard crew. The keel was laid on May 31, 1961. This boat has now been serving Guyana for over 50 years.

Many of us Guyanese have fond memories traveling on this vessel. Some, on a recent Facebook post of pictures of the boat commented that they met their life partners while traveling on this boat.

The boat has provided transportation in all three rivers (Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice) in Guyana.  There have been many ups and downs with its operation over the years but the Government keeps it afloat because it is still part of our critical transportation infrastructure.

In 2017 the Ministry of Public Works invited bids to dock and rehabilitate the vessel. Bids were between $85M-$100M Guyana dollars.
