All the way from Berbice, Kishanna McLeod is redefining the hair braiding industry

October 28, 2023

In the realm of entrepreneurship, a new trailblazer has emerged, captivating attention in the hair braiding industry.

That trailblazer is Kishanna McLeod, who has risen to prominence not via conventional business strategies but through the intricate art of braiding hair.

Her approach and exceptional talent in hairstyling have garnered widespread admiration and are reshaping the way people perceive the art of hair braiding.

But prior to her prominence, McLeod’s upbringing was split between Trafalgar, West Coast Berbice, and Onverwagt.

She attended Number 29 Primary School and later the Mahaicony Secondary School. The journey of self-discovery often starts with the most unexpected catalysts.

For this 23-year-old, it was her secondary school graduation when her mother installed crochet hair into her head.

The experience sparked a passion for hairstyling within her. She was quick to realize that she had a knack for it, and her journey to becoming a hairstylist began.

My mom had installed crochet hair into my head. I thought that was easy to do, so I started experimenting on my own head. I did crochet, sew-in, braids, twists.  Adding to that, whenever a new hairstyle is trending, I would always start doing it on my own hair because I believe if I can do it on myself, then I can do it on others. Apart from myself, I started doing hair on family members.

Despite being employed full-time, Kishanna seized the opportunity to turn her passion into a side business.

Her love for hairstyling has given her the freedom to manage her appointments and accommodate her clients, empowering her to sculpt not just hair but her own schedule.

Being a hairstylist allows me to set my own appointments and create my availability to meet clients. It’s liberating.

Her services range from box braids, knotless braids, feed-in braids, and natural hair to soft locs and butterfly locs, showcasing her diverse skill set.

In a world where many see competition as a driving force, Kishanna embraces a different ethos. She doesn’t consider herself in competition with others but instead focuses on honing her craft and building her brand.

I do not have competitors, for I am not competing with anyone.

Her dedication to her artistry and the recognition she garners for her work is reflected in the commendations from satisfied clients and the continuous influx of new patrons.

People are noticing my work, appreciating it, and I’m gaining new clients regularly.

Looking ahead, Kishanna envisions a well-established hair business that reflects her creativity and dedication. Her future is painted with the colours of success, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

“Just do it,” Kishanna echoes the famous Nike slogan. “Like me, you can make it.”

To the persons out there that are overthinking about making a start for your hair business or any small business, I implore you to take a step forward and start.  Find your passion and research, as starting a business can be challenging, but you can learn from your failures. Network, take risks, put aside pride and the negatives, and make a start.
