Country boy, Devanand Dhanesar, is 2020’s Best Graduating Student within the degree of Optometry at the University of GuyanaDevanand, who once dreamed of becoming a chartered accountant, was overpowered by a compelling desire to help people.

With such a desire, he registered in UG’s optometry programme and has since not regretted it. Devanand described UG as his home away from home. He says the name fits it best since you spend most of your time there or thinking about UG for four years of your life.

Of course, UG was challenging. Nothing worth having should come easy. At the end of it all, I will do it all again, and the College of Medical Sciences will be my top choice.

Dhanesar wishes to thank supreme lord Krishna, his parents, siblings, uncle, lecturers, and classmates for their support. Devanand’s advice to prospective and continuing students of UG is to make mistakes and learn from them.

“In life, we all will be faced with different challenges, and we will make mistakes, and people will judge us; that’s natural but how we deal with challenging moments and how we react to our mistakes is what matters. It is okay to make mistakes but what is not okay is to not learn anything from them.”

He continued, “So, make mistakes and learn from them and keep moving forward. Set goals in life, although sometimes we don’t achieve them, it helps when challenging moments step in. With goals, we will have a reason, a purpose to keep going. Finally, don’t be afraid to fail, for failures are bound to come in every human’s life. Without failure, we cannot taste the ambrosia of success.”
