“I like helping people simply because when I needed help, no one came to my rescue.” – Devindra Persaud Spends All Of His Free Time Doing Volunteer Work

July 23, 2021

When Devindra Persaud is not educating minds at the University of Guyana, he is devoting his time to helping the vulnerable. Inspired by his struggles as a child, Persaud was since been motivated to assist the vulnerable including children, victims of abuse and the elderly. He spends most of his free time helping these people, sometimes even up to twenty (20) hours a week.

Devindra Persaud grew up in D’Aguiar Park, Houston Georgetown and attended the West Ruimveldt Primary School. In the year 2004, he wrote the National Grade Six Assessment and was awarded a place at the Queen’s College where he graduated with passes in twelve (12) CXC/CSEC subjects in 2009.

After completing his secondary level of education, Persaud moved on to the University of Guyana. At the institution, he acquired an Associate of Science Degree in the field of Engineering, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry with a Biology Minor and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics Minor. At the same time, Persaud pursued a Diploma in Accounting and Business from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants at the Accountancy Training Center (ATC).

The global education system today, regardless of modern revisions and upgrades is still fundamentally flawed. It forces you to become a specialist as soon as possible so that you can fit in to pre-determined slots in the society. Thought this trend today is a  necessity in order to earn a decent quality lifestyle, it is extremely toxic to one’s creativity and individuality. In other words, you are forced to sacrifice without knowing what you are sacrificing and before you can do anything about it, time usually runs out.   This is the awareness I use daily and which caused me to pursue a broad base before thinking about gaining specialized knowledge/experience.

I worked with an Electrical/Electronic Agency for one year while completing my engineering studies. Immediately after, I became a Tutor, Instructor, and Lab Demonstrator at the university level. After gaining experience, I took on more roles in a similar capacity, including Lecturing and being a Research Assistant. Additionally, I have training as a Cosmetic Chemist specializing in beauty soaps and perfumes.

Volunteering

Having experienced and witnessed firsthand, poverty, abuse and unfairness especially in the education system, Persaud was motivated to help change this. The adversities he faced in his childhood inspired the young man to help others.

Some of these obstacles include being bullied and treated with prejudice. The issues I had to overcome in childhood gave me the motivation to always strive for success and to have a better quality of life.

For the past seven (7) years, Devindra Persaud has been directing his energy towards assisting the vulnerable, especially underprivileged children, the abused and the elderly.

I have been volunteering (discretely) my time for the last 7 years towards vulnerable people,  mostly underprivileged children, people who suffer from abuse and the elderly. Even though you may read in the news about countless charitable organizations, there are so many people who still need help, mostly because these organizations offer assistance on a conditional basis. I like helping people simply because when I needed help, no one came to my rescue. Looking at myself as an example, I am certain there is tremendous talent which is being lost because appropriate and adequate help is not available to those in need.

According to Devindra, he spends most of his free time sometimes up to twenty (20) hours a week helping the vulnerable because of the need present in society. In essence, most of his free time is devoted to helping others. To manage his hectic schedules as a tutor, student and humanitarian, Persaud sought mediation and is passionate about helping others find their path in life.

My main passion is helping people to overcome restrictions, of all kinds, but mostly those of the mind. The reason for this is because we live our entire lives in our minds, and it is from here all restrictions are born.

In addition to his numerous qualifications and accomplishments,  Devindra also has obtained several advanced certificates in hypnosis, mediation and has been trained as a Cosmetic Chemist specializing in beauty soaps and perfumes. Over the past year, Persaud has been working to develop a line of exotic facial beauty soaps in the beauty line of cosmetics.

Devindra Persaud wishes to contribute to the implementation of systems to fight corruption and to become a well-rounded and balanced philosopher. He wants to achieve peace of mind and tranquillity so he can become the best version of himself and continue inspiring positive change in others. To continue helping the people in need, Devindra aspires to develop more relevant skills to help people find their path in life. Persaud aims to work harder to earn enough to allow him to pursue even higher education. As Peter Ducker said, “learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change”.
