“I’m adamant about being an amazing microblading artist,” Ashley Norton

February 28, 2021

Makeup artist Ashley Amber Norton is currently on a mission to become one of Guyana’s most sought-after microblading artists. Microblading refers to a technique to tattoo hair-like strokes on the brows to make them look as realistic as possible.

Ashley was born on the 28th October 1995 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to parents Samantha Nelson – Glasgow and Kurt Norton.

She grew up with her great-grandmother in Agricola, Greater Georgetown but later moved to Haslington on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) with her mother. Reflecting on her formative years, she recalled playing like an average child while getting into “trouble.”

Honestly, I remember my childhood being adventurous. I loved being outside playing with my friends, which I often got into trouble for because I was one to ‘overdo.’ Nevertheless, I turned out alright though.

She attended the Saint Anges Nursery School then the Saint Andrews Primary School, after which she was awarded a spot at Saint John’s College, where she completed her secondary education.

According to Ashley, she was always intrigued with makeup. In fact, she relayed that she saw a girl with beautifully outlined brows and always wanted hers to look exactly like that.

I practiced for my personal self, still not considering makeup artistry as a profession. I just wanted my brows to look like hers.  It wasn’t until I did a beginner’s makeup course with Ms. Renee Chester that I really realized how much further I wanted to take it all. I was eager to learn everything. I would practice with my friends and sisters, and honestly, the passion just grew. I didn’t want to stop, so I kept going, and now I’m here.

Ashley then began freelancing for a makeup artist, but during the heights of the covid pandemic, she launched her own business under the name “Artistry By Amber.”

Artistry By Amber provides makeup services for all events, including bridal, birthday, photoshoots, SFX makeup, along with makeup one-on-one classes for beginners and advanced students.

Very soon, I will be offering facials and microblading services, which I am very excited about since eyebrows have been my favourite feature since day one.

The businesswoman revealed that the populace has responded positively to her venture but noted that one of her biggest challenges is “procrastination.”

I have so many ideas to do and be better, but I tend to second guess because I love things to be done perfectly, and when it’s not, I hold back. It’s something I’m working on, though.

Reflecting on some lessons life would have taught her, the mother of a beautiful baby girl said;

The best lesson was definitely me realizing that bad times are just as inevitable as the good, and I would be wasting time expecting things to be great all the time. Since whenever something goes wrong, I take it for what it is. I accept it, and I keep going because nothing is worth being stuck in a negative mindset, and I love being happy and positive. It’s the one thing I preach to my friends.

Perfecting her art while helping others to do the same and expanding her business into a beauty lounge with just a few strokes of the brush is the mark Ashley aspires to leave on the make-up industry.

I want to expand, have an entire beauty lounge with like-minded individuals, and create my own product line. I’m adamant about being an amazing microblading artist. I see myself excelling with it & once I’ve seen it. I also want to be in a position to help others with their dreams. I didn’t get to this point alone. My mom has been a major push, and I only want to do for someone what she’s done for me.
