While the village is predominantly African Guyanese, the community offers a glimpse into a world where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.

PRESERVING ANCIENT TRADITIONS

One of the most captivating aspects of this village’s culture is the preservation of ancient traditions, such as the Queh-Queh ceremony.

This pre-wedding dance, accompanied by songs, dances, and traditional foods, is a vibrant celebration of love and union.

As Cynthia Kellman, a direct descendant of one of the village’s founders, explains, the Queh-Queh is a cherished tradition that symbolises the coming together of families and communities.

A LIVING HISTORY

The village’s rich history dates back to 1842, when eight ex-slaves purchased it for $10,000. Originally a plantation, the village flourished as its residents cultivated coffee, cocoa, citrus, coconut, and ground provisions.

Over the years, the village grew, and its founding families passed down their lands to future generations, ensuring the continuity of Ithaca’s legacy.

EMBRACING CHANGE

While agriculture remains a cornerstone of Ithaca’s economy, the village has seen a shift towards diverse livelihoods. Many residents now work outside the village, contributing to its economic and cultural vibrancy.

Despite these changes, the spirit of community and resilience that define Ithaca remains unchanged.

CHALLENGES AND ASPIRATIONS

Like many communities, Ithaca faces challenges such as flooding, inadequate infrastructure, and limited recreational facilities.

However, residents are optimistic about the future and are working together to address these issues. With government support and community initiatives, Ithaca aims to preserve its heritage while embracing modernity.
