Reece’s Pieces – Creating trinkets and self-defence keychains for women

November 28, 2023

In a country where concerns for women’s safety are ever-present, Reece’s Pieces has ingeniously merged the worlds of self-defense and stylish accessories, introducing a collection of trinkets and keychains that not only accessorise but also serve as tools of protection.

Kureece King – owner and founder of Reece’s Pieces

This unique venture was birthed by 23-year-old Kureece King, who hails from the buzzing village of Plaisance on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

COMFORTABLE AND CONTENTED CHILDHOOD

King recalled her humble upbringing among four children while noting that she was “contented.”

[It was] challenging, but I was never lacking basic necessities, and I was always comfortable and contented.

Her educational journey started at the North Georgetown Primary and Secondary Schools, then at Saint Joseph High School and the Bishop’s High School.

Kureece attained 12 subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination and an Associate in Law and Humanities from the Bishop’s High School.

LAUNCH OF REECE’S PIECES

However, Kureece’s story takes an entrepreneurial turn with the inception of ‘Reece’s Pieces.’ The business, born out of a desire to provide trendy trinkets and a steady income, has evolved into a venture with a social mission—promoting safety for women through self-defense keychains.

I did, through research, decide what I wanted and how I wanted it, devised a business plan, did classes at the Small Business Bureau, and invested a small amount of funds to first test my plan. It was executed perfectly, and my business was a hit.

While the business primarily focuses on offering self-defense keychains, providing security, especially for women. The business has gained popularity, particularly among nurses and women working in shift systems.

This 23-year-old relayed that managing a business alongside full-time employment is no small feat. But she credits her sister for taking full control of the daily operations of Reece’s Pieces.

One major challenge the business faces is the absence of a physical storefront. Operating primarily on a delivery and pick-up basis, Reece’s Pieces navigates the intricacies of customer engagement without a traditional brick-and-mortar presence.

Looking ahead, this businesswoman sees expanding the business and overcoming the challenges posed by the lack of a physical store.
