SS Natural Fruit Flavour: The Taste of Guyana’s Barbeque Scene

May 3, 2024

SS Natural Fruit Flavour has become synonymous with delectable barbeque sauces in Guyana. It has graced the tables of numerous local barbeque joints and elevated the flavours of meats to new heights.

This household name did not emerge overnight. In fact, it is the result of years of dedication and a passion for crafting the perfect sauce.

A FAMILY AFFAIR: THE ORIGINS OF SS NATURAL FLAVOURS

Founded in 2012 by Sandra Craig and her son, Shemroy Craig, SS Natural Flavours is more than just a brand. It is a labour of love.

My mom and I had a snackette in Orange Walk, Bourda, and we started having food and stuff like that. Then we reached out to the public because we wanted to do something different that nobody was doing on Orange Walk at that time. I myself reached out to the public, and we went around asking people what they thought we should do, and some of them said barbecue and what’s not. So, I went back to Mom and said, ‘Mom, most people want barbeque chicken,’ so as a mom is, she jumped on it, and we started producing barbeque chicken for the public.

This marked the beginning of their venture into crafting the perfect barbeque sauce.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO CULINARY EXCELLENCE

Initially, their sauce was a blend of natural ingredients and other barbeque sauces, but the response was lukewarm. Sandra, always the innovator, decided to create their own signature sauce from scratch.

We used to use, like other people, barbecue sauce to mix with our ingredients that mom had. We do that one, two, three times, and mom, being the genius she is, started making her own barbecue sauce without the other people’s barbecue sauce inside.

Today, SS Natural Flavours boasts an impressive lineup of seven flavors: mango, pineapple, golden apple, passion fruit, Soursop, tamarind, and ginger and garlic. Each sauce is a testament to its commitment to quality and taste.

We started to push that product she had there, which was pineapple barbeque sauce, which she first started with. We went back to the public and asked how the Barbecue chicken was, and they said it was really good and that you guys should continue. Since then, Mom and I have never looked back.

INVESTING IN GUYANA’S AGRO-PROCESSING SECTOR

Sandra Craig is not only a businesswoman but also a champion of Guyana’s agro-processing sector. She has dedicated significant time and energy to producing high-value, naturally made products.

Sandra believes that Guyana’s abundance of organic fruits gives them a unique advantage, especially at a time when people are more health-conscious.

We have so many organic fruits in this country that we utilise that many countries don’t do it, and that’s one of the most advantages we will have because we do fruits that will give benefits to people when they eat them, and everybody wants to be healthy, they want to eat healthily. So, we have the raw materials that we can be able to put out there in different products.

EMBRACING OPPORTUNITIES

For the Craig family, seizing opportunities is key. What started as a small snackette has grown into a thriving business that has touched the lives of thousands of Guyanese.
