Turning a hobby into a business might feel like an acid test if it is a matter of leaving your day job and pooling all your resources to be put into something that you had been doing as a leisure time activity.

One has to really think carefully, not twice but more, before turning your after-hours passion into a realistic business venture. You might also be anxious about how your friends and peers will scrutinize your achievements and failures.

However, one person whose hobby has turned into a business is 19-year-old Rosana Catharina Munroe. This young makeup artist is working assiduously to cement her name in the industry.

Munroe was born on the 10th of October 2000 and grew up in Duke Street Kingston until age seven when her mother and father parted ways. She then went and lived with her mother – Marilyn Peterson, in Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, until age 14. They then moved once more to the West Bank Demerara (WBD).

The teenager confessed that while her childhood was not a walk in the park, she always made the best of it. She attended the Kingston Nursery School then the North Georgetown Primary School before transitioning to the Richard Ishmael Secondary School. She was later transferred to the Academy of Intellectual Minds.

I honestly wouldn’t say I had it bad growing up, neither will I say it was all rainbows and sunshine but what I will say is I did enjoy my childhood all the memories growing up everything, it was the best!. I have two sisters, one older than I am and one smaller.

Rosana completed high school with six subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC). She then landed her first job as a Customer Service Representative at a local shipping company.

However, the young artist relayed that she did not enjoy working with the company and decided to make her hobby into a business.

So, I started doing makeup for people for quite a while until I took a break and started training for Customs Officer, which didn’t turn out in my favour.

After leaving the company, the 19-year-old realised her true passion for the makeup industry. She then began perfecting her art by developing her skills. Pivoting to a career as a makeup artist felt natural;

It started off as a hobby, something I always wanted to learn to do. I gradually started practicing and practicing till my skills improved. Do it because I love it! I am creative, personable, and optimistic of my passion and where I am heading in life.

While many might say that the makeup artistry industry is crowded, she believes there is a bite out there for everyone.

I honestly don’t feel we can have too much “talent’ so no, I don’t think it might or will ever be crowded. Everybody deserves a chance to showcase their talents.

Trading under the name “Cathys_makeup,” Rosanna provides exceptional customer services and offers makeup for any occasion, e.g., birthdays, weddings, etc., and soon will be offering basic beginners makeup classes.

One big dream is to turn my tiny little dreams into reality; it takes a lot of hard work, patience, and determination to overcome all obstacles and challenges that come our way while climbing the ladder of success, but I really do see myself owning not one but a few businesses it has always been a dream to be an entrepreneur.

She revealed that her favourite thing about Guyana is our diverse culture, which reflects our many-faceted people.

“From religion to food, music, and art which brings people together. You get to learn traditions, beliefs, behavioral patterns which are passed on from our generation to the next. Our culture is great for promoting tourism and the way in which we interact with the environment and the attitudes towards other groups of people.”

Rosana aspires to be one of the country’s sought after makeup artists in the coming years. She added that her dream is to expand her small business while perfecting her art. She also hopes to help others to develop their skills in the industry and change their lives and build wealth. So, if you are looking to get your face beat for a special occasion, be sure to contact Rosana.
