“My weight loss journey was not an easy one, but it was the easiest one of all I have tried,” Mareshah Yorrick-Dos Santos

What do you do when you hit rock bottom? Well, 30-year-old Mareshah Yorrick- Dos Santos knew that there was only one way to go – it was to get up and get moving. She realised that when you don’t take care of yourself, your health ultimately takes the beating.

Mareshah Yorrick- Dos Santos

Mareshah struggled with weight issues from a very early age. Despite the hurdles, she knew that she had to lose weight in order to feel healthy. Her weight loss story is an inspiration that no matter where you are or what you are doing, anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

Mareshah was born on the 12th May 1990 at the Davis Memorial Hospital to Michelle and Brian Yorrick. She grew up in Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, with her brother Brian Yorrick Jr.

“Growing up with my brother was practically just like most siblings. We quarreled, we made up. Being seven years older than him, we never shared the same friends, so that was one thing we had some troubles with. But overall, it was still a beautiful experience at times. We sat and came up with plans on how we would conquer the world together. Those were some of the best memories,” Mareshah recalled.

She attended the Winfer Gardens Primary and then the Saint Joseph Secondary School. During her secondary education, Mareshah’s grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. This had sparked her passion for the science field. She wanted to get deeper into the field so that she can assist persons who are suffering medically.

In 2007, the 30-year-old wrote the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and was presented a scholarship to pursue a degree in Human Medicine in Cuba.

Reflecting, it must have been a hard thing for my parents to allow their 16- year-old child to leave to a foreign land where she would spend seven years of her life. But I never regretted, neither did they.

She graduated as a Medical Doctor from the Victoria de Giron de Ciencias Medicas in 2014. She has also completed a postgraduate programme in Pediatric Nutrition from Boston University School of Medicine.

The medical practitioner relayed that she always struggled with weight issues as a child. This same issue led her to save her allowances to purchase weight loss supplements not because she was bullied but to feel comfortable in her skin once she was a few pounds lighter.

“After giving birth to my first child, I was at the heaviest (for my adult life). It also had an effect on my health, then is when I knew I had to make a change. I entered into research mode, and I then came across the ketogenic diet. I familiarized myself with what it entails, and with a few support groups, I then embarked on my journey.

“My first week, I can clearly remember losing 3 lbs and felt so excited. In the second week, I lost 6 lbs. My self-confidence started improving, and by the third week, a few people started noticing my progress. My acne had improved, I had a burst of energy, and I felt amazing in my body and soul.”

Mareshah continued the diet for about five months and lost forty (40) pounds. According to the young woman, she began feeling joyful and wanted to help others feel that way.

After losing the weight, I still thought I needed to contour my midsection. Then is when a friend encouraged me to try lipo cavitation. I never regretted it. I was able to lose an additional 4 inches off my abdomen area. My weight loss journey was not an easy one, but it was the easiest one of all I have tried. I still have slip-ups, but then I remember my goal. And inevitably, my past and I persevere.

Sharing your expertise not only helps others in their professional endeavours, but it also helps you. It is for this reason that Mareshah launched her business under the name “Synergy.” Her business was launched last year with trials on several individuals, but it was officially declared open this year.

At synergy, we specialize in lipo cavitation (a non-invasive, non-surgical, non-painful method to get rid of circumferential fat), Radiofrequency/skin tightening, lymphatic massages and drainages, laser lipolysis (uses laser waves to break fat cells) wood therapy, weight mentoring, customized diet plans, diabetes coaching, we also stock shape wears and some nutritional items.

Following the launch, the young entrepreneur explained that she has been receiving good responses from the populace. In fact, she pointed out that many persons want to feel confident and live a healthy lifestyle.

People want to feel confident in a world where it gets busier by the minute; people want to know they can jump-start their journey by starting a lifestyle where they can see results in as little as two days, or lose a few inches off their waistline by visiting a few times. It’s always a great experience to help someone achieve their body goals.

During her weight loss journey, Mareshah said she would have learned;

  1. Never compare my progress to others.
  2. There will be setbacks that do not matter. Getting up back is most important.
  3. And to listen to my body cues.
  4. Focus on my own happiness.

When asked what advice she would give someone struggling with self-confidence because they might be deemed a “fat” person, Mareshah had this to say.

“I would advise that you love yourself. Love yourself enough to choose your health first. You control your destiny; you are the boss of your body, you are strong, as the mindset is everything. Make a start, start at your own pace, and your entire being will thank you later.

“Being a doctor has definitely been advantageous in my pursuit of being a weight loss coach. I would compare it to studying for a theory and then having the practicals done. Being a Doctor has given me the knowledge I need (the theory), and being a weight loss coach is putting that which I have learnt to the test (practical). It makes it so much easier to explain certain processes to my clients. Creating a comfortable atmosphere for my clients.”

The enterpriser credited her success to the Almighty, who has been providing her with guidance.

Also, my uncle, parents, husband, and brother, who plays a huge role in my business development. And my very close friend Mrs.Molhoop who first introduced me to some of the services being offered today at our Centre.

Mareshah hopes to become a motivator, where she can build an empire of strong people that will someday be a coach to some else. She said her goal is to create a reform for healthy eating and acceptable health practices in the best atmosphere possible.
