10 Things To Do On Sunday In Georgetown

Georgetown is the capital of Guyana; it is a city that is traversed by some almost every day. The city is filled with vendors, taxi drivers, bus drivers, banks, stores, restaurants, etc. In addition to the busy city life, Georgetown also has a variety of refreshing places with fun things to do. In this article, ThingsGuyana.com has put together 10 things that you can do on a typical Sunday in Georgetown.

  1.  Start the day off with breakfast at OMG! Restaurant and Bar – You can have buffet breakfast at OMG; some commentators said, “it is the best place to chill with friends and family; the atmosphere is very welcoming; the food and drinks are not too cheap nor expensive.”  in addition the restaurant offers lunch and dinner. It is a cool cozy place to relax and watch some sports. For dinner, be sure to try their famous steak. It is a very private setting; there is a sports bar and it is a perfect place to getaway, sit, drink, eat and relax on a lazy Sunday (or any day).
  2. Visit the National Park – Another exciting place to take the family is at the National Park. This place is great for toddlers or babies; they can remain in their stroller and be pushed on the smooth, roundabout road. The babies will love the fresh air and wide-opened area. There is also a large field behind the National Park; this is a great field for the family, they can choose to sit under a tree, spread a blanket, relax, take a nap or just read a book. The field is wide enough to play any sport that is desired – football, cricket, tennis, volley ball, etc. There are benches and tables; you can sit and have lunch or dinner with the family. Some animals are seen behind the National Park, mostly donkeys, horses and fillies.

  3. Visit the 1763 Monument (Cuffy) – Added to remembering the brave history of this monument, people love to sit around it and linger. There is a wide, open, concreted area in front of the monument where traffic doesn’t usually pass. People mostly traverse this area, they bring their mates, their families, they take a walk, admire the monument and sit on the large rocks that are in front of the monument. There are vendors in the surrounding area as well; they sell food, drinks, mints, gum and candy. Behind the monument lies what is called the Durban Park; this is a venue for the public to enjoy. A lot of events are kept at this Park, for example, a recent Circus has been going on. This would be a perfect setting to come and enjoy a fun filled Sunday afternoon. Nonetheless, with or without the Circus, the venue is there for everyone to enjoy.

  4. Have lunch at the famous New Thriving Restaurant – This is an elegant and tasteful place to go, eat and enjoy. The second flat is more classic with fine dining but there is a wide balcony where you can be a little looser. The balcony is breezy and free, the customer service is friendly, polite and quick. There are juices, beers, cocktails, drinks to keep you cool or warm tea can be sipped if the temperature is hot.   5. See the Botanical Gardens – Another beautiful place that can be visited on a Sunday is the Botanical Gardens. Here you can get a taste of fresh, green environs as well as beautifully arrayed flowers and plants. There are tall and wide trees found in this Gardens; some children would climb them and sit on the thick, strong branches. There are benches found in the Gardens but most people prefer to walk with a blanket, spread it on the ground, bring some home cooked food and have a picnic with the family. Some people prefer to picnic at the back of the Gardens where it is more private while some prefer to remain right at the front where there are more activities. You can bring a ball and bat, play cricket with the family, play tennis or even the common ‘throw to throw’ ball game.
  6. Visit the Zoological Park (Zoo)The Zoo is located within the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens. This is an excellent place to bring children of all age groups; they will love the animals. In the Zoo, they will see parrots, turtles, monkeys, snakes, a harpy eagle, an otter and many other animals. There is also a Petting Zoo that was recently opened; the children can enter and pet the animals. There are ponies that can be petted and there are rabbits that can be seen as they nibble on their food and make holes in the ground. Children in general are fascinated with animals so they will love and enjoy the Petting Zoo. Also, situated inside the Zoo is a playground; you will find a seesaw, swing, slide, monkey bars and a spacious ground to let the children play.

  7. Go shopping or watch a movie at the Giftland Mall – This mall is huge; it consists of almost everything. From a bar to play/game areas for kids; the mall has a supermarket called ‘Food Max’ where you can find almost any grocery or food items needed for a quick Sunday dinner. There are many fast food outlets and cafes within the Giftland Mall; great places to sit, eat and relax. The mall is quite spacious on the inside, wide enough for many people to walk around and chit-chat. It’s a great place for Sunday afternoon shopping; hardware items, toys, clothes, shoes, bags, all can be found at the mall.

  8. Cool out at the Seawalls – The Seawalls is a beautiful place to throw back with the family. You can choose a spot that is quiet and serene or you can choose an area that is more bustling. The Seawalls is generally filled with people; on the weekends especially, people bring their family to enjoy the atmosphere. For the kids there is a trampoline and an open field for them to play on. Sometimes in the evening, acrobats come to entertain the public – they juggle, do tricks and stunts, catching the attention of the crowd. There are benches to sit on or you can just sit on the Seawalls itself and take in the plentiful breeze. Foods and drinks are sold – popcorn, hot dogs, burgers, fries, candy, beers, excel and lots more. You can walk on the beachy sands, collect shells with the family and even get your feet wet.

  9. Go chill at the Pegasus Poolside – This is the ideal spot to relax and unwind, the BBQ and Grill offers a wide choice of delicious dining options and the bar offers a wide selection of cocktails, wine and other beverages. The live bands provide the perfect background for those special times with family and friends. A table at the poolside with the family, by yourself or with a date produces a calming atmosphere for a cool Sunday afternoon.
  10. End the night at Cool SquareAnother great spot to hangout on a Sunday afternoon is at the Cool Square; you can have karaoke nights or just sit and enjoy the lovely music. They are well-known for their fried fish and yummy souse.
