25 M potable water-well and distribution network for Fitzberg/Four Mile, Port Kaituma

A whopping $25 M has been budgeted to drill a new potable water-well and installation of a new water supply network, which will serve households within the Fitzberg/One to Four Mile, areas Port Kaituma, Region One.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, recently visited the site where the water-well will be drilled at Two Mile. These interventions result from several visits to several communities within Region One by Minister Croal, who also holds Parliamentary responsibility for that Region.

Since taking up office, the Minister made visits to several pump stations and water sources within the Mabaruma, Matarkai, and Santa Rosa Sub-districts. Coupled with these visits, a team from the Guyana Water Inc. has been conducting a needs assessment exercise in hinterland villages, intending to address their water woes.

Upon completion of the project in Port Kaituma, the water-well will serve approximately 600 persons through new service connections. This will be the first time families within the One to Four Mile areas will directly access potable water through individual service connections.

This project will entail laying some 4km of pipelines and, according to Minister Croal, will provide direct employment for persons living within these communities.

This new system will be interconnected to the existing Port Kaituma system. The water-well will be powered by electricity supplied by Port Kaituma Power and Light. The project will be managed and supervised by Engineers of the Hinterland Service Department of Guyana Water Inc. with a project life of two months.

Meanwhile, over the coming weeks, the Minister is expected to visit pump stations and water sources in other hinterland villages throughout the country.
