History Of Carnegie

  • In 1933, Scotsman, Andrew Carnegie, established Carnegie and a grant was donated by the Carnegie Board of Trustees and an additional grant from the UK. Ms. Briant, the first Principal, was entrusted with the task of establishing the school, with the undertaking that the government would assume full responsibility if the venture succeeded.
  • In 1937, the government did assume full responsibility for the school, thanks to her careful management and zeal. During that time, a trading section was developed. This section produced custom made ladies garment and uniforms for government messengers. Large scale catering was undertaking on request.
  • In 1958, the trading aspect of the school was discontinued. Thereafter, the school was renamed the Carnegie School of Home Economics (C.S.H.E), and the curriculum was aimed at giving every girl an opportunity to learn the skills and attitudes essential for a good, family and community life.
  • In the 1960’s training of teachers of Home Economics was established at the school.
  • In 1971, a separate catering section was established to give more specialized training in food preparation, and service. Consequently, the public was offered economic and attractive meals of high standards in a pleasing atmosphere.
  • During the period 1988 to 1990, financial and technical assistance was given by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges and the International Development Agency to enhance the catering programme.
  • In the year 2000 the Cosmetology programme and the Garment Construction programme were developed with the help of the Social Impact Amelioration Project.

Courses Offered At The Carnegie School Of Home Economics

  • Diploma Course – Duration: Two years. Courses are Catering and Hospitality.
  • Certificate Courses – Duration: Six months each. Courses are Food and Beverage Service, Hot meal Preparation, Bake Shop/Garde Manger, Interior Decoration. Duration: One year courses are Household Management, Garment Construction, Hairdressing and Cosmetology.
  • Household Management – Duration: Two years. Must be at least 16 years of age and should have completed the basic secondary school programme. The courses are Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Home Economics Management, Basic English and Mathematics, Entrepreneurial Studies, Visual Arts and Social Studies. In the second year, students can specialize in either Commercial Food Preparation or Garment Construction.
  • Catering and Hospitality – Duration: Two years. Must be 18 years and over to apply. This programme is comprised of three specialist areas: Food and Beverage Service, Food Preparation and Service which is subdivide into Bake Shop/Garde Manger and Hot meal. Students are expected to prepare and serve meals for special functions, in and out of school and to avail themselves to work at those functions on weekends or holidays.
  • Garment Construction – Duration: One year. Must be 17 years to apply and have a sound secondary education. This course is geared to meet the needs of the Garment Industry. Student will be trained in the areas of designed, drafting, cutting and sewing of garments using industrial machines and equipment. Areas such as quality control, effective displaying and entrepreneurial skills are taught.
  • Cosmetology and Hairdressing – Duration: One year. Must be 17 years to apply and have a sound secondary education. This course provides theoretical and practical tutoring in the following areas of Cosmetology: Hair and Scalp Care, Nail Care and Nail Technology, Facial Treatment and the application of facial cosmetics.
  • Evening Programmes – Duration: 20 Hours each. Courses include Elementary Cakes and Pastries, Advanced Cakes and Pastries, Cake Decoration, Elementary Cookery, Advanced Cookery, Crochet and Macramé, Fabric Decoration, Floral Arrangement, Dressmaking 1, Dressmaking 11, Intermediate Dressmaking, Creative Décor and Tailoring. Ad HOC Programmes – Housekeeping for the office, Etiquette, Food Service Supervision, Waiter/Waitress Service and other programmes requested by organizations. Classes of twenty hours (20 hrs) are offered to out of school youth and adults, one day per week, for ten (10) weeks. Other courses are introduced periodically. There are also annual August vacation courses. Participants are required to pay a subsidized fee.

Tip: Carnegie was known formerly as the Carnegie Trade School.

 

Carnegie’s Staff And Medical Requirements

The staff of Carnegie comprises of a principal, vice principal, an academic staff of fourteen instructors and a support staff of twelve. Full-time students are required to have a complete medical examination. All persons entering the Catering and Hospitality programme must be in possession of a valid food handlers, certificate. A minimal fee is required for admission.

Carnegie School of Home Economics

Carnegie is indeed an excellent place for you to attend if you desire to acquire a skill. The programmes offered such as the Household Management, Catering and Hospitality, Garment Construction and Cosmetology and Hairdressing are all superb courses to lead you towards your dream job. If you are too busy for a full time course, there are many part time courses that are offered which would be more suitable for your schedule.
