Since 1992, the Rock View Lodge has been welcoming visitors to the savannahs and rainforests of Guyana’s Rupununi.

In 1969, Colin Edwards came to Guyana as an agricultural volunteer; he is an Englishman who became the owner of the Rock View Lodge. The Edwards’ are a blend of Amerindian, Brazilian, British and Basque! His love for the Guyanese interior, the arts and the people of both Guyana and Brazil may be seen in this unusual lodge which is environmentally friendly and has a special relationship with the community development efforts of the surrounding Amerindian villages.

The efficient and friendly staff are both members of the family as well as neighbors around Rock View. They are mostly trilingual, speaking a combination of English, Portuguese and their native Makushi language.

Activities at the Rock View Lodge

Evenings may be spent in the old family ranch house with a fine art collection, library and good music. All buildings have electricity and running water from a deep well. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with hundreds of palms, fruit and flower trees that enhance the natural beauty of the Rupununi River, wooded mountains nearby and the rolling hills and savannahs.

Visitors are accommodated in comfortable, well furnished, self-contained suites. They have a Toyota Hilux pickup, a four-wheel drive Bedford truck, horses, bicycles and boats for your transportation needs and requirements. The Rock View Lodge also takes those who have booked for a visit to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway.

Facilities at Rock View Lodge

 Guest Rooms: There are eight private guest rooms which contains netted twin and double beds, bathe, flush toilets and electricity in each room.

Swimming Pool: The pool is both cool and warm and consists of decorative rocks and boulders as well as clumps of cacti and succulents.

Hammocks: On the front veranda of each room there are netted hammocks that are perfect for a refreshing afternoon’s relaxation or for a cool night’s sleep. Also, you can rock gently in the shade of a cashew tree as you relax in a hammock with a refreshing drink.

Benabs: There are palm-thatched benabs that are available for relaxation, meetings, workshops, and retreats.

Food: Meal service begins with coffee and tea at dawn for those rising early to go birding, followed by home-cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner served under the old mango tree. Because Rock View sits as a crossroads between the trans-national road and Annai airstrip, you’ll often find yourself enjoying a meal with visitors from all over Guyana. The Lodge owner Colin Edwards and his staff often join guests for dinner in what has become a friendly, familiar tradition.

The Rock View Lodge is the primary venue for the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival, held in February each year. The lodge also operates the region’s first and only sustainable aquaculture project, offering visitors the chance to catch their own fresh fish meal. A new Culinary Tourism programme invites visitors to work with the Lodge’s Amerindian cooks to become acquainted with local, indigenous cuisine from home grown produce.
