When you hear about Pomeroon-Supenaam, one of the first things that comes to the mind of most Guyanese is the mighty Pomeroon river – the deepest river in Guyana. They have good reasons to think this way since the region is actually named after the Pomeroon and Supenaam rivers. The Pomeroon river is situated between the Orinoco and the Essequibo rivers and the area has long been inhabited by Arawak people. About Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two

Pomeroon-Supenaam is a region of Guyana which borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara to the east, the region of Cuyuni-Mazaruni to the south and the region of Barima-Waini to the west. Pomeroon-Supenaam contains the towns of Anna Regina, Charity, Pickersgill, Spring Garden and Suddie. There are three popular lakes on the Essequibo Coast – Capoey, Mainstay and Hot and Cold. Capoey is near Anna Regina.

Population Of Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two

The population is made up of the Amerindians who live in settlements and other ethnic groups who live in the villages that have been established along the coastland. Settlements in the region are mainly located near the rivers, trails and airstrips.

One of Guyana’s town is found in Region Two, it is called Anna Regina. This town has an interesting history. Before the area was made into a town, eighteen small villages were merged into a village district. This was in the year 1872. In 1990, the eighteen villages, which comprised both agricultural and residential areas covering an area of about nine square miles, were incorporated into a town.

The Government of Guyana has administered three official censuses since the 1980 administrative reforms, in 1980, 1991 and 2002. Official census records for the population of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region are as follows:

Lifestyle Of Persons Residing In Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two

The people are involved with agriculture due to extremely fertile agricultural lands. They produce crops such as rice, coffee, ground provisions, coconuts and citrus. They are also involved in the production of rice; Kayman Sankar’s Complex at Hampton Court is an outlet from which rice is exported. Another source of income for the people of Region Two is lumber. This is harvested from areas along the banks of the river where the trees grow more abundantly. Logs are cut and tied into rafts before they are floated down the river to the sawmills. There they are cut into suitable building material much of which is exported. Some farmers are involved in cattle rearing and some traditional economic activities are farming and hunting.

Places To Visit In Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two

  • National Monument: Region Two has a national monument. The Damon’s Cross is a national monument that was erected in the village of Anna Regina in July 1988.
  • Tapakuma Project: The Tapakuma Project in this Region links the Tapakuma, Reliance and Capoey lakes into one large conservancy, which supplies irrigation water for rice fields which dominate Region Two.
  • Places: Pomeroon-Supenaam is the gateway to Region One and Venezuela. A Coast Guard Station is located at the mouth of the Pomeroon River. Thirty-six miles of road links Supenaam to Charity. The town of Anna Regina is mid-way between Charity and Supenaam. The Regional Administrative Office is located at Anna Regina. The Regional Hospital, High Court and Registry for the Essequibo County are at Suddie.
  • Lakes: To facilitate visits from tourists, resorts have been built to accommodate and refresh them. Resorts are situated at Mainstay Lake, Capoey Lake, Hot and Cold Lake.

Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two In Guyana

After reading this article, you would have seen that Pomeroon-Supenaam is an amazing place with a unique lifestyle. One of Guyana’s largest rice producers, Kayman Sankar Ltd operates in this region, producing rice not only for local consumption, but also for export to other countries of the world. Besides rice farming, some people cultivate coconuts and care for beef and dairy cattle. Timber production is conducted on a very small scale in this region. Not surprisingly, the Region is known as ‘the Rice land’. The Pomeroon-Supenaam region comprises forested highland and low coastal plain, but also takes in a small portion of the hilly sand and clay region. The people of this region live in Amerindian settlements and more established villages concentrated along the coast. The town of Anna Regina, on the west bank of the Essequibo River, grew out of a government land development scheme and is made up of former plantations such as Henrietta, Lima, La Belle Alliance.
