For most people, when they hear the term ’Sterling’, only one thing comes to mind – ice cream. And not just any ice cream, igloo ice cream. Though they are absolutely right (Sterling produces delicious ice cream) the company is also known to provide a wide variety of other products. What else do they produce? Read on to find out and also discover how Sterling came about.

About Sterling Products Limited

Sterling Products Limited was incorporated as a Public Limited Liability Company on October 15, 1954. It commenced operations with the production of Margarine, Lard, Ghee and Soap. Export of the products commenced with Golden Cream Margarine being exported to Dominica in November 1957. The production of detergent began in 1967 and Butter (Golden Dairy Butter) in 1969.

In 1973, the Company embarked on revitalizing its operations by modification of the soap plant and commissioning of a new plant to improve production of edible fats. It also commissioned a new plant and a cold room for Ice Cream production and a three-year contract was made with Banks DIH for the distribution of Bimbo Ice Cream. The Company continued to improve its operation in 1974 by acquiring a Versator to improve the quality and quantity of detergent produced. It also acquired machinery for packaging margarine in tubs in this year. In 1979, a generator was installed and re-design of the edible fats section was done in this year.

In 1980, a playground, pavilion and scoreboard were provided for workers’ relaxation. In 1983 the sinking of a well was put in place for adequate quantity and quality of water. In 1985, a distribution of CREMO Ice cream was enhanced with the opening of the first Igloo Ice cream Outlet in Camp Street. In 1986, production of the cone biscuits commenced and in 1993 the company began distributing Ice Cream Novelties for Flavourite Foods Ltd (A Trinidad Company). In 1995, rehabilitation and installation of a new freezing machine and additional cold room for ice cream was put in place. Also, a new generator and boiler were commissioned. Further developments took place in 1997.

In 1998, the Beharry Group of companies acquired a majority shareholding in the Company. Between 2001 and 2002 a new building was erected to house the New Edible fats and Ice Cream sections. The new edible fats plant was commissioned early 2003 and so new export markets were serviced during that same year for soap and edible fats.

Products Of Sterling

  • Detergent – Sterling produces detergents such as: Mighty Foam All Purpose Cleaner, Mighty Foam Dishwashing Liquid, Mighty Foam Liquid Laundry Detergent and Mighty Foam Powdered Laundry Detergent.
  • Edible Fats – The Company also produces edible fats such as: Golden Cream Margarine, Sunny Vale Butter (unsalted & alternative), Baker’s Pride Shortening, Marigold Margarine, Abbey Butter Spread and Umda Phalka Ghee.
  • Beverage – Hydr8 Coconut Water. This is made from locally grown coconuts on Guyana’s coast. They are picked and processed under the safest and strictest standards, Hydr8 is pure coconut water and has no additives or preservatives.   • 2016 Remodel Of Igloo At Providence – In December 2016, Sterling opened its new Igloo Ice Cream Parlour and Play Park at Providence, East Bank Demerara which has been well received by the public. “We’re very proud of the Igloo Ice Cream Parlour we’ve built. Since opening in December to now, sales have actually doubled, if you look at year-on-year,” Chief Executive Officer, Ramsay Ali said.
  • 2018 New Igloo At Enmore – A new Igloo Ice Cream outlet was opened at the Enmore mall, East Coast Demerara. It is using the power of sweet treats to generate fun, positive human engagement and community spirit in the area. It was launched on the September 15, 2018. This outlet has quickly become a prime meeting place where families and passersby can unwind in a pleasant environment and enjoy Igloo’s Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Cherry and Cookies and Cream ice-cream. Another outlet is opened on the Corentyne Coast, East Berbice.
  • 2019 New Igloo Near Stabroek – Sterling has opened another new outlet to make its premium Igloo Ice Cream available to customers near Stabroek Market Square in the heart of Georgetown. The new outlet was launched on March 1, 2019 and is strategically located on the upper-story of the KFC fast-food restaurant adjacent to Stabroek Market.
